Naukowcy z Departamentu Obrony Stanów Zjednoczonych i Air Force Research Laboratory opracowywali wspólnie projekt bezpiecznego systemu operacyjnego dla wojska (lecz nie tylko). Efektem ich pracy jest wypuszczona właśnie dystrybucja Linuxa nazwana LPS – Lightweight Portable Security.

Jest ona dostępna na live cd, gdyż założenie projektu było takie, aby stworzyć czysty i bezpieczny system, którego pracownicy będą mogli używać na niezabezpieczonych komputerach na przykład w hotelu czy w domu odpalając go bezpośrednio z płytki CD, czy też z pendrive’a. Dlatego system nie montuje nawet lokalnego dysku twardego, przez co w systemie nie są zapisywane absolutnie żadne informacje.

W LPS preinstalowane zostały wszystkie narzędzia, które potrzebne będą do działania, a więc chociażby przeglądarka internetowa oraz manager plików.

Lightweight Portable Security, Public edition (LPS-Public) offers for free a safer, easier, non-persistent, multi-platform and DoD-approved means to enter the AF Portal, AKO/DKO, NKO, MOL, webmail and other CAC-restricted websites. Booting from a CD and running only in RAM, LPS-Public installs nothing, does not need administrative rights, and purposely cannot access the hard drive. LPS-Public is great for those with Macintosh, Linux, Windows, etc., those using others’ computers and/or for more sensitive or risky cyber activity.

LPS-Public provides a Firefox browser with plug-ins, CAC middleware and a PDF viewer within a very thin Linux operating system. You provide a Mac or PC (x86, Pentium 2 or newer) with 384 MB RAM and a bootable CD-ROM drive, a firmware-updated, CCID-compliant USB SmartCard Reader (aka CAC-reader) and a wired or wireless (WiFi) Ethernet/network connection. The first step is to burn the free ISO image to a CD.
